Climbing Mount Meru is always an adventure, but doing it in the rain adds a whole new dimension to the experience. When I set out to hike Tanzania’s second-highest mountain at 4,566 meters, I knew the weather might be unpredictable. What I didn’t fully anticipate was how much rain would shape the journey, challenge my mindset, and ultimately deepen my appreciation for the mountain.
This is my personal story of climbing Mount Meru during the rainy season, along with lessons learned along the way.
The Trek Begins Under Grey Skies
From the moment we entered Arusha National Park, the sky was heavy with clouds. Light rain fell as we started hiking from Momella Gate, soaking the forest floor and filling the air with the scent of wet earth. The montane forest felt alive. Leaves glistened, streams flowed freely, and bird calls echoed louder than usual.
At first, the rain felt manageable. The trail was muddy but not overwhelming, and the cooler temperatures actually made walking more comfortable. I quickly realized that rain on Mount Meru doesn’t mean poor visibility all the time. When the clouds lifted briefly, the forest looked greener and more dramatic than I had ever seen.
Slippery Trails and Slower Progress
As we gained altitude, the rain intensified. The trail became slippery, especially on steeper sections and exposed roots. Every step required focus. Hiking poles became essential, helping with balance and reducing strain on the knees.
Progress was slower than usual, but that taught me an important lesson: Mount Meru rewards patience. Moving slowly not only reduced the risk of slipping but also helped with acclimatization. Instead of rushing, we took time to observe the mist drifting through the trees and the occasional glimpse of wildlife moving quietly through the forest.
Life at the Huts During the Rain
Reaching Miriakamba Hut felt especially satisfying after a wet day on the trail. The sound of rain on the roof continued through the evening, creating a calm and reflective atmosphere. Wet clothes were hung carefully, boots were dried as best as possible, and warm meals felt incredibly comforting.
By the time we reached Saddle Hut the following day, the rain had become part of the routine. Conversations with other trekkers often revolved around weather stories, shared laughter, and encouragement for the summit attempt ahead.
Summit Day in the Rain and Wind
Summit day started before midnight under cold, damp conditions. The rain had eased, but strong winds and thick clouds replaced it. The volcanic ash and rocky sections were challenging, especially with reduced visibility.
As dawn approached, something magical happened. The clouds began to thin, revealing glimpses of the Meru Crater below. By the time we reached Socialist Peak, the rain had stopped completely. Standing at the summit, surrounded by swirling mist and brief views of the landscape, felt surreal and deeply rewarding.
The lack of a clear sunrise didn’t diminish the moment. In fact, it made the achievement feel even more personal and earned.
What the Rain Taught Me About Mount Meru
Climbing Mount Meru in the rain taught me several valuable lessons:
- Good rain gear is essential, including waterproof jackets and backpack covers
- Slower pacing improves safety and enjoyment
- The mountain is just as beautiful in mist and rain as it is under clear skies
- Mental resilience is as important as physical fitness
The rain stripped the climb down to its essentials, reminding me that adventure isn’t about perfect conditions but about adapting and persevering.
