Climbing Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak at 4,566 meters, was an adventure I will never forget. Nestled within Arusha National Park, the mountain promised a challenging trek, incredible wildlife sightings, and panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. As someone hiking for the first time on Mount Meru, I discovered that it’s more than just a climb it’s an immersive journey through diverse ecosystems, volcanic landscapes, and unforgettable moments.
Here’s my personal account of summiting Mount Meru, along with tips for fellow trekkers.
Day 1: The Trek Begins at Momella Gate
The adventure started at Momella Gate, where the first steps took me through lush montane forests. Giant hardwoods, moss-covered branches, and the sounds of birds created a peaceful atmosphere. Along the way, I spotted colobus monkeys swinging from the trees and heard the distant calls of hornbills.
Hiking the lower slopes gave me a sense of the mountain’s rich biodiversity and provided plenty of photo opportunities. The first day ends at Miriakamba Hut, a cozy stopover where I met other trekkers and prepared for the next stage.
Day 2: Ascending to Saddle Hut
The second day took us through mid-altitude forest and moorlands. Giant lobelias and Helichrysum plants lined the trail, and small streams offered refreshing breaks.
Climbing toward Saddle Hut, I noticed the vegetation thinning and the views opening up. Panoramic vistas of the Arusha plains and Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance made every step worthwhile. This stage is perfect for acclimatization, and I found the short hikes to lookouts invaluable for preparing for the summit push.
Day 3: Summit Day – Reaching Socialist Peak
Summit day began around midnight, with headlamps cutting through the dark and cold. The climb to Socialist Peak, the highest point, was steep and challenging, but the mountain’s changing landscape kept me motivated.
As dawn approached, the sky exploded in hues of pink, orange, and gold. From the summit, I could see Meru Crater below, the surrounding volcanoes, and even the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro on the horizon. The sense of achievement was overwhelming, and I spent a quiet few moments soaking in the incredible 360-degree views.
Wildlife and Flora Along the Way
Even on a strenuous climb, Mount Meru offers wildlife encounters and botanical wonders:
- Giraffes, zebras, and buffaloes near the lower slopes
- Colobus and blue monkeys in the forests
- Over 300 bird species, including hornbills, sunbirds, and turacos
- Giant lobelias and Helichrysum at mid and high altitudes
The variety of flora and fauna added a sense of adventure and discovery to every stage.
